Healthy Tips

HEALTHY TEETH · HEALTHY LIFE

Dietary habits

Your dietary habits are very important in the progression of caries (cavities).  In order to reduce the risk of you getting caries you should reduce snacking frequency between meals and stick to three meals a day.  Limit the amount of cariogenic foods – fermentable carbohydrates that can be found in sugary drinks, desserts, candy  – that are you in your diet.

Oral Hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial in the prevention of oral diseases. Poor oral hygiene can lead to the formation of cavities or gum disease.

Brushing for oral health

Make sure you brush twice daily (morning and night) with fluoridated toothpaste. Tooth-brushing can remove dental plaque on tooth surfaces. We should brush our teeth in the morning and before bed at night every day. Thorough removal of plaque can prevent periodontal disease. The toothbrush head should be placed with the tips of the bristles tilted at an angle towards the gingival sulcus which is located at the gingival margin, and where plaque tends to accumulate. Brush your teeth systematically in order to ensure all teeth surfaces have been brushed.

Flossing for oral health

It is also important to floss as food and plaque may get stuck between your teeth. Tooth-brushing cannot clean the adjacent surfaces of teeth. If we want to remove the plaque accumulated on the adjacent tooth surfaces, we must use dental floss or inter-dental brush daily. Parents or caregivers can assist children or people in need to clean adjacent tooth surfaces by using a floss holder.

Inter-dental Brushing

If the spaces between teeth are large like those teeth with gum recession due to gum disease, you may use inter-dental brush to clean the inter-dental space. Insert the inter-dental brush into the gap between the roots of the teeth, brush forward and backward to clean the adjacent tooth surfaces.

Regular dental check up

It is important to see your dentist regularly for a check up so they can identify if you have any dental caries or periodontal disease (gum disease). In a dental check up the dentist may have to take x-rays to see if you have any cavities and help you clean and polish your teeth.  For more information please refer to: https://www.toothclub.gov.hk/mobile/en/index.html
